Mindfulness Changes Your Brain Part 2 – Amygdala
AARGGHHH RUNNNNN! - This is what the amygdala would regularly say….. ( if it could speak). This part of the brain is like an alarm bell, which goes off when we think something might be threatening to us. It fires up the “fight or flight” part of our nervous system and triggers fear & anxiety. Some of us have more reactive amygdala than others though, with the the bigger worriers having highly reactive amygdala, leaving them feeling threatened much of the time. However neuroscientists from Stanford recently found that an 8 week mindfulness course lowered the reactivity of meditators’ amygdala, which may explain why people often say they feel more relaxed and don’t get as stressed as they used to.
