Andy has just returned from his book writing bonanza and shares some of his experiences
“There’s more to this book writing malarky than meets the eye...”
This was the reply I gave to Rich when he phoned me up to ask how the book was coming along after just a couple of weeks. And there really is!
But I’m very happy to announce that this morning I finally sent the script for ‘Get Some Headspace’ over to the publishers. There will still be a bit of work to do on it of course, but here at Headspace we’re all very much looking forward to it’s publication next May.
You’d think it would be a huge relief, that I’d want to bask in the after-glow, knowing that I had somehow made the deadline in time. But funnily enough I’ve enjoyed it so much that not even 2 hours after sending the first book off, I already find myself looking forward to writing the next one.
It genuinely has been a privilege to write, a fascinating process which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Writing 80,000 (coherent) words in just 8 weeks was always going to require a big push, but then I knew that monastic discipline was going to come in handy at some stage or other. And of course on those days when my mind might have otherwise wandered, the deadline from the publisher and the threat of legal action buried in the contract provided all the incentive I needed to stay focused. Yeah, ok, so I guess the meditation might have helped a little too!
Lots of people have asked what’s in the book and I’ll be covering many of the topics on our blog and even on Amazon on the lead up to publication in the next few months. Needless to say, I’d like to think that it’s the essential guide to getting some headspace in your life. And as far as we can see, there really is nothing else out there like it at the moment. So, staying true to the Headspace approach, it’s meditation, but maybe not as you know it.
If you’re new to meditation then it will give you a great introduction, a solid foundation and loads of useful tips on how to best get started. It’s a very practical book and hopefully very accessible too. I tried to write the entire thing without using a single word of Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, or any other language for that matter, making it a much more friendly read. In the end I was forced to use just one word of Sanskrit, but it was of such importance in blowing away some of the myths around meditation that it just couldn’t be avoided. And I figured that one word out of 92,000 was not too bad going really.
But I think it will be equally useful for those of you who are already meditating and looking for that extra bit of guidance for a more stable or fulfilling practice. When it comes to meditation, there really is always more to learn. Whether it’s learning new techniques, refining your approach, or finding new ways to integrate meditation into your everyday life, Get Some Headspace covers it all. And of course there are plenty of case studies looking at how best to approach very specific mind states, emotional patterns and stress-related physical health symptoms which you might be worried about.
But it was always my intention to make this much more than a simple workbook. Of course, I wanted it to be practical, accessible, and relevant to your life, but I also wanted it to be much more than that. For me, a good book needs to be engaging - whether that’s informative, humorous, touching, exciting, or a combination of them all. And so that’s what I’ve tried to make it. It’s packed full of stories, from the monastery and beyond, and so should hopefully be every bit as enjoyable for the casual reader as the enthusiastic meditator. Because sometimes all it takes to change things is a fresh perspective.
